New Zealand 1st Innings 612-9 d (194.5 over)

Kane Williamson scored his fifth double-century (200 runs) for New Zealand, helping them take a 174-run lead over Pakistan. He and Ish Sodhi shared a 159-run stand, frustrating Pakistan’s efforts to get them out. Pakistan tried to use the rough patches to its advantage, but the duo was undeterred. When the third new ball became available, it offered more chances for Pakistan to get a wicket, but New Zealand’s batters were not troubled too much. Williamson’s double century took him past Brendon McCullum in the all-time list for New Zealand, and it was his second double ton against Pakistan. The match ended with New Zealand declaring at 612/9 and a lead of 174 runs over Pakistan’s 438.

Pakistan 2nd Inning: 77-2 (31 over)

PAK vs NZ 1st test scorecard: Babar Azam breaks multiple records with a stunning Test century against New Zealand

Babar Azam:

Runs: 161 runs

Ball played: 277

Fours: 15

Six: 1

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam had a historic day on the field on Monday, as he brought up his ninth Test century against New Zealand in the first Test. The right-hander reached the milestone off 161 balls, with a six off Michael Bracewell over midwicket just before tea. His efforts helped Pakistan recover to 224/4.

In doing so, Azam broke a 16-year-old record held by Mohammad Yousuf, becoming the Pakistani batsman with the most runs in a calendar year.

Azam’s teammate, Sarfaraz Ahmed, was also instrumental in the recovery, with a solid knock of 68. The wicketkeeper-batsman was recalled to the team after a two-year absence, and he made the most of the opportunity, forming a crucial partnership with Azam.

The Pakistan captain has been in top form recently, with three centuries in his last five Test matches. His consistent performances have helped his team secure victories, and he will no doubt be a key player for Pakistan as they look to secure a win in this Test series.

During his innings, Azam shattered multiple records, including scoring the most 50s or more in a calendar year as a captain. He moved past Australia’s Ricky Ponting, who had 24 half-centuries in 2005. This year has been a standout one for Azam, as he has registered more than 1,000 runs in just nine matches, becoming the highest Test run-getter in 2022. His milestone of eight centuries in 2022 ranks third all-time on the list.

Azam has also gone past former players Brain Lara, Graeme Smith, and Mahela Jayawardene, as well as his contemporary, Australian vice-captain Steven Smith, for the most centuries as a captain in a calendar year. The Pakistan skipper has also performed well in limited-overs games, leading his team to three series victories and scoring 679 runs in ODIs this year. He has consistently stepped up for his team, bailing them out of crucial situations.

Kane Williamson’s Fifth Double Ton Leads New Zealand to 174-Run Lead Over Pakistan

Runs: 200 runs

Ball played: 395

Fours: 21

Six: 1

New Zealand’s Kane Williamson scored his fifth double-century and shared a 159-run stand with Ish Sodhi to lead the team to a 174-run lead over Pakistan on the fourth day of their test match. Williamson and Sodhi batted for over half a day, adding only 79 runs in the first session but setting the tone for the rest of the day.

The pitch offered a slow turn and rough patches, but the duo was able to comfortably work the runs. Nauman Ali almost picked up a wicket when he struck Williamson on the pad, but a review revealed that the ball had pitched outside the leg stump. Pakistan’s luck with reviews did not improve, as they wasted one against Sodhi.

With the old ball not offering enough bite, Pakistan availed the third new ball when it became available. However, it did not trouble New Zealand’s batters too much, though it did offer more chances. Sodhi twice edged through the vacant slip cordon and once, just minutes before lunch, he got a feather on the ball but none of the players on the field picked it up. An appeal never came and Sodhi was able to bring up his fifty in the second session.

Williamson punctuated his steady knock with lofts down the ground and also used the reverse sweep effectively, even though it was being played off the rough. New Zealand suffered a blip when Sodhi was caught at mid-off, Tim Southee fell for a duck, and Neil Wagner gloved a sweep, leaving three wickets in as many overs for just two runs.

However, Williamson managed to bring up his milestone with a lofted six and a four over cover, taking him past Brendon McCullum in the all-time list for New Zealand. It was also his second double ton against Pakistan, leading Tim Southee to declare at the stroke of tea. The scores are currently at 612/9 for New Zealand and 438 for Pakistan.
