The IPL points table follows a set of rules to determine the position of the teams in the league:
Points system: The points table is determined by a point system where teams receive 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie or no result, and 0 points for a loss.
Team Position: Teams are ranked based on the number of points they have earned. In case of a tie between two or more teams, the Net Run Rate (NRR) is considered to determine the position.
NRR calculation: NRR is calculated by dividing the total number of runs scored by a team in all the matches by the total number of overs faced by the team in all the innings. After this, the run rate of the team giving runs is subtracted from the run rate of the team.
Qualification for playoffs: At the end of the league stage, the top four teams in the points table qualify for the playoffs. In case of a tie on points between two or more teams, the team with the higher NRR qualifies for the playoffs.
Playoff matches: The playoffs consist of one eliminator, two qualifiers and a final. The top two placed teams on the points table play against each other in the first qualifier, with the winner going through to the final. The third and fourth-placed teams play in an eliminator, with the winner of the second qualifier facing the loser of the first qualifier. The winner of the second qualifier plays against the winner of the first qualifier in the final to determine the IPL champion.
